Neps Count:
Nep count is the number of neps per 100 square inch of card web forming a standard hank of the sliver of 0.12 Ne on a 40-inch wide card. In this article, we will know how to calculate neps count from the card web.
Before we know how to calculate it, we have to know what is neps?
Neps: Neps are considered small tight balls of entangled fibres. That’s leading to the downgrading of yarn and fabric. The cross-sectional size of neps is +140 to +400% of normal yarn and its fault length is 1 mm.
Classification of Neps
For cotton fiber; there 5 types of Neps. They are as:
- Process Neps: Produced by faulty carding or up to spinning yarn.
- Mixed Neps: Fiber tangle around foreign materials.
- Immature Neps: Formed by processing immature fiber.
- Homogeneous Dead Neps: A tangle of nearly all dead fibres.
- Fuzz Neps: Fault of short fuzz fibers.
Nep count is the no. of neps per hundred square inches of card web forming. To calculate nep count, at first, a web is collected from the card and placed on a 10 inch X 10-inch blackboard. Then the neps are counted and the number of neps found is corrected for any difference in hank or cord width. Nep count is generally expressed by n.
How to Calculate the Neps Count from Card Web
Mathematically, n = m X 100
Where, m = No of neps per inch 2 card web
Problem: 1
A 42” wide card web of multiplying 100 of the mean value per square inch. Calculate the nep count of that card web.
Solution:
Nep count, n = m X 100 = 0.13 X 100 = 13 (ANS)
Problem: 2
4 kilotex is produced from a web of card width 38” after testing 5 cells web formed to contain nep. Calculate nep count.
Solution:
Sliver hank = 4 Ktex = 590.6/ 4000 Ne = 0.14765 Ne
