What does it mean by sliver?
Fiber will be called a sliver when they are in a long bundled shape. At the time of yarn spinning, this form of fiber is used. Here we will discuss the calculation for determining drawn sliver hank.
How sliver is made from fiber?
Well for making sliver fiber needs to go through some processing. Carding and combing are such processes that are responsible for making sliver. We know raw fibers are neither disciplined nor clean. But for spinning-like operation, we need to ready clean properties materials. Carding and combing do this job. Fibers are drawn into long stripes where fibers are in parallel to each other. The sliver gotten after carding and combing will be called as carded and combed sliver respectively.
What is hank?
Hank is one kind of yarn package where the yarn is in coil form. This package is most suitable for using in handloom. The measurement of yarn in one hank varies according to yarn type.
Example: For cotton and silk 1 hank is equal to 768 meters, whether for linen it’s 270 meters only.
Calculation for Determining Drawn Sliver Hank
- Worsted yarn 570 meter equals 1 hank

Ultimately this formula goes as,

The weight of 12 yards of sliver is 600 grain, Calculate the hank?
Solution:
Given data,
- Sliver length=12 yds
- Sliver weight=600 grains
Hank =?
Then,

Sliver hank = …………………..
……………………..840 x 600
= 0.1666
=0.17 (ANS)

Find out the weight of a one-yard sliver of 0.15 hank?

- Sliver length = 1 yds
Then as we know,
