Determination of Fabric Weight in Tex System

Tex:
The yarn number or count in the Tex system is the weight in grams of 1000m or 1 km of yarn. The Tex standard uses 1,000 meters of thread per gram as the starting point. This means if 1,000 meters of thread weighs one gram, it is Tex 1. If 1,000 meters of thread weighs 25 grams, it is Tex 25. In this article we will know the determination of fabric weight in tex system.

Determination of Fabric Weight in Tex System

We can determine the Warp and Weft Weight of Fabric in Tex System by the following formulas –

Determination of Fabric Weight in Tex System

Determination of warp yarn weight

Warp yarn weight (Kg)
= (Total no. of warp yarn X Warp length in cm X Tex) / (1000 X 1000)
= (Warp yarn/cm X Fabric width in cm X Fabric length in m X Tex) / (1000 X 1000)

Determination of weft yarn weight

Weft yarn weight (Kg)
= {Picks/cm X Fabric length in m X Fabric width in cm (1 + C) X Te} / (1000 X 1000)
Where, C = Crimp %

Mathematical Problems
A single-ply grey fabric has 2160 warp yarn of 30 Tex and 32 selvages yarn of 40/2 Tex. If the weft yarns of 25 tex, 30 picks/cm, fabric length is 50m, Warp length is 55m, warp width in reed 100 cm, then calculate the fabric length.

Solution:

Warp yarn weight = (no. of warp yarn X Warp length X Warp Tex) / (1000 X 1000)
= (2160 X 55 X 30) / (1000 X 1000)
= 3.56 Kg

Selvage yarn weight = (No. of weft yarn X Warp length X Selvage Tex) / (1000 X 1000)
= (32 X 55 X 40) / (1000 X 1000)
= 0.07 kg

Weft yarn weight = (Picks/cm X fabric length X warp width X Weft Tex) / (1000 X 1000)
= (30 X 50 X 110 X 25) / (1000 X 1000)
= 4.13 kg

So, Fabric weight = Warp yarn weight + Selvage yarn weight + Weft yarn weight
= (3.56 + 0.07 + 4.13) kg
= 7.76 kg   (ANS).
