Calculation of Fabric Consumption for Full Shirt and Trouser

The quantity of fabric is needed to make any definite apparel is called Fabric consumption. After completing the sample garments, to know about the price of the garments we must need to know the actual fabric consumption. Here we will know the Calculation of Fabric Consumption for Full Shirt and trousers There are two methods for determining fabric consumption. They are

  1. Marker method
  2. Mathematical method

Our today’s topic is the Mathematical method. How we will be able to detect actual fabric consumption for any garments? Let’s see how to Detect fabric consumption for a Full shirt & Trousers.

Fabric Consumption for Full shirt:

There is a theory for shirt’s fabric consumption, Z = x+y

Here, X = length of shirt X Width of shirt
And Y = sleeve length X Width of Armhole

Again,

X= (A+3ʹʹ) X (B+3ʹʹ) X 2 inch²
Y= (C+2ʹʹ) X (2D+2ʹʹ) X 2 inch²

Where,

A = Length of the shirt
B = Width of the shirt
C = Sleeve length
D = Width of Armhole

……………………….Fabric consumption (inch²)
Fabric length = ……………………………..…………..
…………………………………Width of fabric

Mathematical problems:

From Given Dimensions of the full shirt, Find out how much length of fabric will be needed for making the shirt?

Length of shirt = 30ʹʹ
Width of shirt = 25ʹʹ
Sleeve length = 21ʹʹ
Width of Armhole = 22ʹʹ

Solution:

Here,

A = Length of the shirt
B = Width of the shirt
C = Sleeve length
D = Width of Armhole

We have to find what square inch of fabric will be needed?

And how much length of fabric needed?

From theory we came to know that,

Fabric consumption (Z) = X + Y
= (A+3ʹʹ) X (B+3ʹʹ) X 2 + (C+2ʹʹ) X (2D+2ʹʹ) X 2
= (30ʹʹ + 3ʹʹ) X (25ʹʹ + 3ʹʹ) X 2 + (21ʹʹ+2ʹʹ)X (2 X 22ʹʹ + 2ʹʹ) X 2
= 33 X 28 X 2 + 23 X 46 X 2
= 1848+2116
= 3964 inch ² (ANS)

When fabric width = 44 inch then,

………………………..Fabric consumption
Fabric length = …………………………………
……………………………..Fabric width

= 3964/44

= 90 inches (ANS)

Fabric Consumption Calculation for Trouser:

Trouser
Fig: Sketch of Trouser

From the above Figure, the fabric consumption for trouser is shown in below

Generally, a trouser is looked like figure “A”. But for finding consumption we need to draw another sketch like figure “B”.

Height and weight of the trouser should be measured and denoted as H & J respectively.

Fabric consumption for trouser (P) = (H+4ʹʹ) X (J+2ʹʹ) X 4

Here,

H=Weight &
J =Width through cork line(1/2)

Mathematical problems:

A trouser having height = 40, Width through cork line(1/2) = 13. Now find out the fabric consumption?

Solution:

Given,

Trouser’s height = 40ʹʹ
Trouser width = 13ʹʹ
Fabric consumption =?

We know from the theoretical discussion,

Fabric Consumption for trouser (P) = (H+4ʹʹ) X (J+2ʹʹ) X 4
= (40ʹʹ+4ʹʹ) X (13ʹʹ+2ʹʹ) X 4
=44 X 15 X 4
= 2640 inch² (ANS)
